The Zumba Debt is Paid

Sometime ago, I started a “Zumba” series of posts on the blog, all stemming from a misguided wager on college basketball. Darn you, Pitt Panthers…

You can read the backstory here.

But I digress. The debt has now been paid. Three Zumba classes under my belt. And it’s a good thing, too, because I’m about 1 more class away from becoming known around the Y not as “the swimmer guy,” or “the runner guy,” but as “the Zumba guy.”

That’s not to say I was good at it. I was not. Good. At all. But I wasn’t noticably worse than the majority of the class; at least that’s what I took from Jamie the Zumba lady.

Apparently there’s some policy about not filming women’s latin dancing classes. Or something. So instead, I offer up a few of my inner thoughts during Zumba class, along with an interview with Jamie the Zumba lady:

1) You want me to do what with my hips?

2) Oh – so THAT’S why there’s no men in this class.

3) Great. Another wiggle. Can’t we run in place again?

4) Hmmm… that side stitch lets me know I’m not ready to crunk yet.

5) I’ve got to do a little more research before filling out my bracket next year.

6) I’m just going to keep looking at the 65-year-old granny. She makes me feel better about myself. Or worse. I can’t tell any more.

7) Sure are alot of mirrors in this room.

8) Get low, get low, get low… I’m freakin’ trying!

9) This song is called “Candyman.” That seems to fit what I’m doing.

10) Just tripped again. I feel like I’m square-dancing in 5th grade PE all over again. Not good memories.

Loves loves loves #7. And #10.
Reminds me of when i tried step aerobics (SO NOT FOR ME) back in college . . .
i tried to hide in the back . . . then halfway through the class, the teacher chirpily demanded, “Now! Let’s all turn and face the back!” And, yes, that put my clumsy, step-trippin’ self in the “front”. Awesome.

This is hysterical! I laughed for six minutes out loud with no one around. It was just great. The whole thing from the bet to the dancing was a lot of fun to learn about. I too have learned that the best bets in the world have no cash value. A friend of ours who lost our NCAA pool bet and had to wear extremely short women’s jogging shorts to a social function. Everyone saw inner thigh that was so lilly white that it hurt to look at. Humiliation is hysterical and priceless.

Too bad I was out of town and missed this posting in real time. But for those who may read this in the future, no matter what mental image you may have of Michael Kelley doing “Walk It Out,” it was so much better in person. Thanks, Michael, for being a great sport, for dancing like a white boy, and especially, for taking on the bet. Go Tarheels! I’m forever in your debt, Tyler Hansbrough.

    Dear Michael
Keep it up…the debt is never paid. As you probably know, each day the healthy body debt starts all over again. You will get better with time…believe it!

There’s an 80 year old gentleman in my class and he just keeps on going…like the Energizer bunny!

Your instructor’s personality is upbeat, fun, positive. I’m sure she makes the class a lot of fun!

    Good luck.
