Faith + Beer = Guinness

I found this to be a pretty fascinating video.
In some evangelical circles, faith and beer are mutually exclusive concepts. I’m not arguing whether they should or should not be, but this video is really, really interesting. Might pick up the book described here because this seems to be a pretty intriguing story.
What do you think?

Interesting. In my quest for a “beer palette” Guinness Daught is what was handed to me on my 40th birthday. Though I have not acquired a taste for it yet, this make me want to like it. Maybe you’d like to help me finish off those last two bottles, MK?

MMMM Guinness! That’s a beer to defeat all beers… and now even more so.
Makes me want to go get a perfect 119.53 seconds pint. Nothing can beat Guinness in the beer realm (and I live in Alaska, where we have amazing local microbrews)

I’ve been reading the book, albeit slowly, and am really enjoying it. It’s a rare example of corporate generosity, personal passion and faith-based initiative. And when you consider the source and many faith-based opinions of it, I find it compelling. Definitely worth a read.

I haven’t read it yet, but I’m glad to hear from someone who is. Thanks, Whit.

Every company should have this type of benevolence. Reminds me a lot of the TOMS brand shoes, that gives a pair for every one bought.
So is it just us Lutherans who participate in Theology on Tap or Bibles and Beer? What better way to connect with young adults who are leaving the church than a pub. Take almost any activity or interest, add a devotion, and that’s better than it being purely secular.
Thanks for what you do Michael.

It may be just you Lutherans, Kevin. I’ve read a few stories recently about some other denominations who have tried something similar and it’s been pretty frowned upon.
Curious how you would respond to the criticism that doing something like that (pardon the expression) waters down the gospel. Any thoughts on that?

I like what I know of Mansfield’s other work and the topics he tends to tackle (he wrote “The Faith of George W. Bush” and “The Faith of Barack Obama”). He actually lives in downtown Nashville!

That’s interesting – didn’t know he was a Nashville guy.
