Fridays Are For One Question

It’s that time of year again: graduation time. And this time of year, I like to play the “what-would-i-say-if-i-was-ever-a-commencement-speaker” game. Bet you can’t guess how to play.

This week’s question is along those lines. You are a commencement speaker at your alma mater. You have done your speech, and now you come to the very end. For this week’s question:

“Complete the following sentence to close your commencement address: ‘And finally, graduates, …”

**The goal of “One Question Friday” is simple: To show that everyone has something funny, engaging, creative, and worthwhile to say. So comment away! Be real. Be creative. Think hard. And check back to see how others answered the question.

Well, I actually am giving a baccalaureate speech Sunday, though not for my alma mater. As for my closing line…I’ll let you know when I get there.

Work and life with purpose, but throw your career plan out the window. Be open to opportunity and count on ambiguity. You might not end up using your major after all.

Don’t waste your life on the so-called American Dream,,it’s shallow and poor. Chase Jesus with all your heart and soul and mind and strength, for He is deep and rich. At the end of your days, you will be the same. Chase the Lord with the great expectation of the satisfaction to hear, “Well done good and faithful servant.”

Remember that nobody knows as much as a high school senior and nobody knows as little as a college freshman!

(How’s that for being affirming and uplifting as they go out into the world. That line was used at a commencement I attended this week, although it wasn’t the final statement. I thought it was a good quote to have in the speech and it got some laughs.)

“And finally, graduates, … follow hard after Jesus (assuming we can mention His name). Seek Truth with all of your heart. Let your goal be to finish well.”

Do not trade in the real battles of life for the artificial battles of sports, TV, Movies, fantasy. Fight the Good fights where eternity is on the line, Hell is at your door, and the love of Christ is all you have.

    And finally, graduates, …

    Don’t follow the crowd.
    Love the haters.
Believe what Jesus tells you each day.
    and whatever you do…
    Don’t double down on stupid.
