Fridays Are For One Question

I found myself yesterday afternoon walking laps around a baseball field holding a crying baby. And it was hot. Humid. Sticky.

Christian, the baby in question, was putting out a fairly regular stream of drool and spit up on my hand. He was sticking to me like I was made of velcro.

Did I mention it was hot?

So I started thinking about the times in my life when I have been the hottest. There was this time, pressed against an infant in my work clothes circling the fence during a 5-year-old baseball game. Then there was a time we were in a subway in Cairo with no air conditioning and it got stuck. Or when the sun came out the day of the marathon. So much heat. And that leads us to today’s question as we enter into the summer:

“What’s the hottest you have ever been?”

    I think I may win this one . . .

In a Port-A-Pottie in Iraq in the middle of the Summer.

    There’s hot, and there’s Iraqi Port-o-john hot.

Driving through the Sahara Desert. It was 114 outside, and I was sweating inside the car with the A/C full blast.

Haha, maybe I should just say that I live in Alaska so mine probably wouldn’t compare to any of yours. I remember one day up here when my wife and I had a car without AC, and we were driving to the small town where her parents live (an hours drive) and just before getting into town, there was something holding up traffic for a mile! It was probably the hottest day of the year, and we were hungry… so it made it all the worse. It was pretty tough.

Also, I have a memory that sticks out from when I was much younger and went to visit my Dad. He took me on a vacation to Las Vegas and walking on the streets from AC to AC was rough. There was one stretch when we were heading for the Star Trek Experience that was a pretty long walk, and I thought I was going to die from overheating. “Come on Alaska boy, we’re almost there.” Good thing I was too young to understand everything else going on in that city. All I remember is the Star Trek thing, the heat, and the GIANT arcade I spent most of my time in while my Dad was in the casinos. I know… lovely vacation, eh?

When we were in Eritrea (just north of Ethiopia) on a mission trip, the temperature was well over 100 degrees. On our tourist day we decided we would cool off and do a little snorkeling in the Red Sea. A nice idea until we realized that the water temperature was not much better. Lots of beautiful fish and coral, but it was so hot in and out of the water it was hard to enjoy. Not to mention, it was more like a salt bath than a refreshing dip in the sea. Yuck! I feel sticky just thinking about it.

Hands down, when I was giving birth to my daughter (I did it all natural)…yeah, that was DEFINITELY the hottest I have ever been….

I loved my Honda Civic – 1st car ever had, but it had no AC the last 4-5 years I owned it. That meant 3-4 years of summers in Texas, with August being 30 days straight 100+ heat. Showing up for work, or for that matter anywhere, with a seatbelt stain of sweat is not fun.

I had to drive from College Station, TX, south to Victoria (about a 4 hour drive, one way) and back in July in a car with no AC. I kept getting drinks and putting ice packs on myself to keep cool.

We were traveling with Compassion in Uganda. We were in a small bus. The AC was no producing cold air – driving down a dirt road for over an hour. The driver wouldn’t let us open the windows because of the dust, and he was insisting that the AC worked (nope).

Very bumpy. Crammed in. HOT. Jet lagged. HOT. Dripping off of my shirt sleeves.

Haha, wow! You guys have got some stories!!
Can next Friday be “what’s the coldest you’ve ever been”? I’d definitely have some more interesting stories to choose from for a question like that than my sad little examples for this week..

That line got a good laugh outta me.

Ninth grade. World Changers in…Memphis. I was on a roofing team that was working on two neighboring houses in the beginning of August. People up top would throw the old shingles into the alley between the two houses…onto a plastic tarp. Around 3 o’clock one day, an inspector came and charted the temp between those two cinder-block houses, on top of reflective plastic and black tar shingles, at 125. Awesome. We weren’t allowed back in that alley the next day…
