Fridays Are For One Question

Today my beautiful wife and kids return home after a 2-day road trip back from the Panhandle of Texas. It’s a trip we’ve made often, and funny thing about it – it’s still a long ways. But every time I’m on the road, I hearken back to the days of my youth when there was no distance too great for my dad to drive us. We would pile into the station wagon, and later the suburban, and hit the road. So let’s talk road trips on today’s question:

“What’s the best road trip you’ve ever been on?”

**The goal of “One Question Friday” is simple: To show that everyone has something funny, engaging, creative, and worthwhile to say. So comment away! Be real. Be creative. Think hard. And check back to see how others answered the question.

I hopped over here from SCL– great post!

Not so much one trip, but going to my grandparents house in Florida– we traveled the 12 hours down there every couple of summers. 7 people (5 kids- 2 adults) in a van. Once we traveled during the night (less traffic and heat) and the car ran out of gas on the highway. I woke up and we were on the side of the road. My dad was walking to the nearest gas station and my mom was scared out of her mind (in hindsight). I was little so I just thought it was fun!
We also had walkie talkies when we were in more than one car– and we’d pick up random conversations from truckers! And we listened to a LOT of Cat Stevens during those trips!

Susan – Thanks for stopping by. Nothing like a trip to PaPaw’s house in Florida.

One memorable summer we (my family minus a college-aged brother only too happy to escape this trip) got to take a buddy along with us from West Texas to the Mesa Verde area in SW Colorado. It was the heat of summer and we drove through New Mexico to get there, all three of us girls in the camper bed of a pickup truck with all the camping gear. Near Farmington NM we started to heat up considerably and convinced Dad thru sign language it was time to let us in the air conditioning. After unpacking all the stuff and swapping it for us, we cooled off: only to stop in Farmington and eat the hottest green chile laced Mexican food we’d ever had in our lives. There was no end to the heat. But also no end to the fun we had on that memorable trip of Indian ruins, KOA showers, and campfires in Colorado.

Getting lost every time I took my nieces to St. Augustine, FL (I live in Jacksonville).
On one such trip I drove in a big circle back into Jacksonville and got us lost when we finally got into St Augie. Needless to say I had a terrible sense of direction until I bought a phone with GPS navigation. Now, I can track my way out of the thick jungles of…whichever area my cellphone provider covers. My nieces still laugh and rib me about that (it’s been a few years). My reaction when we got lost was tell them to just enjoy the ride…I would then roll the windows down and crank the tunes. We’d sing and have a blast.

    Good times.

P.S. I just read your guest post on SCL. Awesomely humorous! I laughed out loud…a lot.

    Thanks!
    Jenn

(I, too, just came from SCL. Loved your post)

Recently, my mom and I took a trip from our little town in the great Pacific NW to Spokane, WA. It wasn’t too long of a drive, and the way over wasn’t very exciting.
On the way home, however, we started look for state license plates (a game i haven’t planned in too many years.) Since we had no deadline of time to get home by, we continued to stop at every rest stop, just to find more plates. I believe we found about 26 or something close to it. We even saw a school bus from a little town near mine! It’s something i hope i never forget.
