I Write Like…
Posted by MK | Filed under Just for Fun
Just for fun this morning, do you want to know which famous author your own writing resembles in style and substance?
Just what you’ve always wanted, right? Well here you go…
I apparently write like James Joyce. Booya!
How about you? And if everybody responds that they write like James Joyce, I’ll be sorely disappointed…

I write like Cory Doctorow. I looked him up on Wikipedia, and I think they got it wrong (the “you write like” site and not Wikipedia, although…well…it’s Wikipedia, so I’m sure some things are wrong). Maybe I’ll be inspired to write about digital rights management?

Apparently I write like Robert Louis Stevenson. Thanks for the link, very interesting.
I personally find your writing much more exciting than James Joyce. And less confusing…

Apparently I write like William Gibson, master of the cyberpunk sci-fi sub-genre. Would it be wrong of me to say I’m disappointed?

Oh I don’t know – there’s much to be said for the cyberpunk sci-fi crowd.

would you believe…

So, I experimented:
I took 1 of my papers that I’ve written, and analyzed two different sections: the 1st came back Dan Brown. Guess I write like a heretic, according to the Catholic church? The 2nd came back James Joyce.
Then, I took 2 different blog posts: the 1st – James Fenimore Cooper, the 2nd James Joyce.
I hope your bubble did not burst.

First post I copied over: Stephanie Meyer
Second post: H.G. Wells
Hmmm…
July 19th, 2010 at 9:57 am
I had to try 3 different blog posts.
1st- Stephen King
2nd- James Joyce
3rd- William Gibson
I wonder if it changes every time or if I am just that confusing?

Wow. This is getting interesting. And all you suckas who are also James Joyce? The blogosphere might not be big enough for all of us…

So, Miguel, does that mean you are ready to throw in the towel to make some room for us other James Joyces?

I’ve never read Ulysses, but my understanding is that if it was dropped on my foot, I’d lose a toenail. Given that, I’m not sure there’s room for more than 1.

I did read Ulysses – it was the hardest book to get through and the most agonizing 4-6 weeks of my life. Thank you English Degree! So I am just wondering if writing like James Joyce is what you are going for. I agree with the previous comment that you are much better than Joyce -so boo ya to James Joyce!?!

I see several other females write like James Joyce, Stephen King and Dan Brown. For myself I found that a bit jarring. Of course I have never read a single word of their work so perhaps the comparison it’s not so bad. Yet having seen the movie versions of their books I think the masculine voice must definitely be in their written work for I believe it is reflected in the films. So on second thought I don’t think I am comfortable not effectively projecting my female voice. What to do? Not willing to give up quite yet I decided to submit a poem and test the bugger. At last a female comparison. However I am not quite sure I like the idea of my contemplative poetry sounding like a passage from a Harry Potter novel. I was hoping for Jane Austen. Determined to test this thing one more time, I actually submitted a passage from Pride and Prejudice – ah ha! Now we shall see! Well apparently Jane Austen writes like Jane Austen … shoot-a-pickle. I think perhaps I will go actually read a Jane Austen novel instead of just watching the films, maybe something will ware off.

Ellen, when I read your comment I thought “That’s funny, the comment sounds like Jane Austen.” So I checked. You should see the result.

I got Stephen King too. It told me I should read On Writing, but if I already write like him then what’s the point?

Hi, thanks for this post it was fun to take part in! Apparently, based on my short example, I write like Kurt Vonnegut. Didn’t see that coming.

I got that I write like Stephen King too. Funny part is…my text sample was the blog I recently wrote about my son being born.
Ummmm…
