Fridays Are For One Question

As of Joshua’s 6th birthday, we have officially added a Wii to our household. It’s pretty cool, but I admit that it’s a little over my head. Lots of buttons on that thing. And a joy stick. And something called a “nun-chuck” I think. It makes me long for the, um, simplicity of a Nintendo.

That inspired today’s question. So think back to the Nintendo, the arcade, or whatever else you can knock the cobwebs off of:

For our Commodore64 keyboard/disk drive and black & white television (the “screen”): Family Fued.

Original Nintendo at my cousins’ house: Kirby – he was a pink bubble, the levels were easy, and there were mid-levels with fun matching games! All I ever wanted.

There was also a Barbie game (I had it for the original GameBoy, which I used with my sweet LightBoy) where each level was her at a different store in the mall (except for two levels where she was a mermaid?)…you had to help her put together her outfit for her big date with Ken. I’m proud to say I actually won that one a few times…

My favorite was Sonic the Hedgehog for Sega Genesis. I also liked Super Mario 3 for Nintendo, but only if you had the Game Genie and could get the cheat codes. And I’m sure this is wrong, but I loved playing Mortal Combat on Sega with the blood code. Up, down, up, down, left right, A, C, A, C, A, B, B. : ) If that’s really it…then I will be shocked.

The blood code! I love it.

Mike Tyson’s Punchout. And, along with Katie, I still remember the code to get to Tyson – 007 373 5963. What’s wonderful about the Wii is you can buy some of these old games, including Punchout (and the code still works).

Dr. Mario. One of my roommates had an original Nintendo in college, and there was a lot of Dr. Mario played during finals time. (Also available for the Wii)

Mario 1. I could rescue that princess with my eyes shut. But all they’ll do is send me on another mission to rescue her again!

Yes, that Princess Toadstool is notoriously careless in the area of being kidnapped.

The original Mario Bros. on the simple Nintendo. When I was pregnant with Ryan, I had to spend 17 days in the hospital. I was so bored being on bed rest for 23 hours a day. I asked the hospital for a Nintendo, and they brought a PlayStation up from the children’s ward. I couldn’t figure the thing out. So I begged and pleaded with my brother to find our Nintendo from when we were kids. It took him a couple of days, but he found it, and I happily spent the rest of my days in the hospital playing Mario Bros. The nurses would walk in to check my IV or make sure I was ok and look at me kind of funny because I was a pregnant adult, playing a child’s video game.

    As a kid?
Probably one of the Zelda games. In college it was X-Wing flight simulator (my roomies and I took out an Imperial Star Destroyer with an A-Wing. It took hours and we took turns). Post college it was MechWarrior 2. Now…I really like Halo2.
