Fridays Are For One Question

We’ve started playing the “take-turns story” game at our house.

It’s pretty simple. I start a story, hand it off to the kids, they tell a part, then hand it back to me, and so on. Usually it involves Star Wars, though when Andi gets a chance to tell her part, somehow Cinderella makes an appearance in the Millineum Falcon.

Whatever – it’s a take-turns story.

Point is that there is always an epic battle scene between the forces of good and evil. Such is the inspiration for today’s question:

“What’s the best pairing of hero/villain ever created?”

I am a huge comic book fan, and therefore a huge fan of hero/villain matchups. For this one though, I’ve gotta go with the classics and say Sherlock Holmes/Professor Moriarty. They were equal in every way, but their moral compasses were opposite.

A close second would be Jean Valjean/Javert. Grace vs the Law.

Have you seen Face/Off? (I’m kidding.)

I’m watching The Wire right now, which I don’t feel entirely comfortable mentioning on a ministry site, but which does give me a skewed idea of heroes & villains right now. Mainly, that motivations are unpredictable and could flip the hero/villain coin pretty easily.

That being said…Superman/Lex Luthor. No doubt. Overtly patriotic w/ Superman being everything positive about American and Lex representing everything “negative” (I put in the quotes because capitalism falls in there, and that’s a touchy subject…). A redemptive Superman/Lex match-up is in Field of Dreams (Ray as Superman, Mark is Lex) where Lex sheds the cynicism at the end and steps away from the dark side. (I just try to tie Field of Dreams into as many conversations as possible.)

The Smurfs vs. Gargamel. Can’t go wrong with that match-up.

    Face/Off?! …sweet.

Perhaps not a hero/villain paring, but a great rivalry is Angier and Borden in The Prestige. Bitter rivals indeed.

If I had to go with something a little more good vs. evil, a favorite that comes to mind is Edmond Dantes and Fernand Mondego of The Count of Monte Cristo. Probably because we’re planning to watch that movie again soon.

This shows my geek side in true colors: Jean Valjean and Javert in Les Miserables. Seriously, some of the best characters and foes I have encountered!

Oh, then I scrolled up and saw Steve give a shout out to Les Mis. Glad I’m not the only one out there!

Also, kudos to Count of Monte Cristo.
