Martin Bashir’s Interview with Rob Bell

Perhaps you’ve been following the controversy regarding Rob Bell’s new book Love Wins. Bell has received much valid criticism for his leanings (if not outright teaching) of universalism.

This interview is striking and ironic at so many levels. It’s a reporter, a supposed objective source, trying to pin down a pastor on the nature of heaven, hell, and the gospel. And in so doing, you have a reporter clearly articulating some of the core truths of the Christian faith.

Conversely, you have a pastor trying not to be pinned down by refusing to state in definite terms what the gospel is and its implications for human beings everywhere.

Irony. And sadness.

This interview reveals Mr. Bell as a consummate post-modern Gen-Xer. He wants to have it both ways, God is mysterious, cannot always be understood, and thus people are free to pick and choose what to believe. However, God is also the author of eternal truth that ultimately will save your soul if you so choose. I will resist the urge to speculate about Mr. Bell’s motives for writing this book and making a high profile spectacle of himself. I will say that I will not be wasting my money on his book or time on his teaching.
